How the spark is produced in Electric Discharge Machining ?

A typical circuit used for supplying the power to an EDM machine is named as the relaxation circuit. The circuit consists of a DC power source, which charges the capacitor ‘C’ across a resistance ‘Rc’. Initially when the capacitor is in the uncharged condition, when the power supply is on with a voltage of Vo, a heavy current, ic, will flow in the circuit as shown to charge the capacitor. The relaxation circuit as explained above was used in the early EDM machines. They are limited to the low material removal rates for fine finish, which limits its application. This can be explained from the fact that the time spent on charging the capacitor is quite large during which time, no machining can actually take place. Thus the material removal rates are low.

How to Calculate Sparking Time?

Sparking Time calculator uses Sparking Time = pi*sqrt(Capacitance*Inductance of Spark Time) to calculate the Sparking Time, The Sparking time formula is defined as the time for which a spark can be sustained before breaking and generation of a new spark. Sparking Time is denoted by ts symbol.

How to calculate Sparking Time using this online calculator? To use this online calculator for Sparking Time, enter Capacitance (Ct) & Inductance of Spark Time (Lt) and hit the calculate button. Here is how the Sparking Time calculation can be explained with given input values -> 16.75621 = pi*sqrt(4.99*5.709).

FAQ

What is Sparking Time?
The Sparking time formula is defined as the time for which a spark can be sustained before breaking and generation of a new spark and is represented as ts = pi*sqrt(Ct*Lt) or Sparking Time = pi*sqrt(Capacitance*Inductance of Spark Time). Capacitance is the ratio of the amount of electric charge stored on a conductor to a difference in electric potential & Inductance of spark time is the tendency of an electric conductor to oppose a change in the electric current flowing through it.
How to calculate Sparking Time?
The Sparking time formula is defined as the time for which a spark can be sustained before breaking and generation of a new spark is calculated using Sparking Time = pi*sqrt(Capacitance*Inductance of Spark Time). To calculate Sparking Time, you need Capacitance (Ct) & Inductance of Spark Time (Lt). With our tool, you need to enter the respective value for Capacitance & Inductance of Spark Time and hit the calculate button. You can also select the units (if any) for Input(s) and the Output as well.
How many ways are there to calculate Sparking Time?
In this formula, Sparking Time uses Capacitance & Inductance of Spark Time. We can use 1 other way(s) to calculate the same, which is/are as follows -
