Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient Solution

STEP 0: Pre-Calculation Summary
Formula Used
Ascites Albumin Gradient = Serum Albumin Level-Ascites Albumin Level
SAAG = SAL-AA Level
This formula uses 3 Variables
Variables Used
Ascites Albumin Gradient - (Measured in Kilogram per cubic meter) - The serum-ascites albumin gradient or gap (SAAG) is a calculation used in medicine to help determine the cause of ascites.
Serum Albumin Level - (Measured in Kilogram per cubic meter) - Serum Albumin Level is the levels of albumin in a person's blood. If the level indicates an abnormal amount of albumin, it may suggest a problem with the liver or kidneys.
Ascites Albumin Level - (Measured in Kilogram per cubic meter) - Ascites Albumin Level determines the level of albumin which is a type of protein the liver produces. It’s one of the most abundant proteins in your blood that circulate throughout your blood to help your body maintain fluid balance.
STEP 1: Convert Input(s) to Base Unit
Serum Albumin Level: 5.5 Gram per Deciliter --> 55 Kilogram per cubic meter (Check conversion here)
Ascites Albumin Level: 4.2 Gram per Deciliter --> 42 Kilogram per cubic meter (Check conversion here)
STEP 2: Evaluate Formula
Substituting Input Values in Formula
SAAG = SAL-AA Level --> 55-42
Evaluating ... ...
SAAG = 13
STEP 3: Convert Result to Output's Unit
13 Kilogram per cubic meter -->1.3 Gram per Deciliter (Check conversion here)
FINAL ANSWER
1.3 Gram per Deciliter <-- Ascites Albumin Gradient
(Calculation completed in 00.020 seconds)

What is Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient?

Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient defines presence of portal hypertension in patients with ascites. It is more useful than the total protein concentration of ascitic fluid in the classification of ascites. This gradient is physiologically based on oncotic-hydrostatic balance and is related directly to portal pressure. A high gradient (> 1.1 g/dL, >11g/L) indicates the ascites is due to portal hypertension, either liver related or non-liver related, with approximately 97% accuracy. This is due to increased hydrostatic pressure within the blood vessels of the hepatic portal system while a low gradient (< 1.1 g/dL, <11 g/L) indicates causes of ascites not associated with increased portal pressure such as: tuberculosis, pancreatitis, infections.

How to Calculate Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient?

Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient calculator uses Ascites Albumin Gradient = Serum Albumin Level-Ascites Albumin Level to calculate the Ascites Albumin Gradient, The serum-ascites albumin gradient or gap (SAAG) is a calculation used in medicine to help determine the cause of ascites. Ascites Albumin Gradient is denoted by SAAG symbol.
